Health Office

A certified Nurse staffs the Maxfield Elementary School health office. When they are not in the building, teachers and office staff manage health issues. If your child has a chronic health problem (such as a heart condition, asthma or allergies), please contact the nurse early in the year so that this information is recorded on your child's health record and procedures for managing this condition can be used in working with your child. It is also important to notify the school of any contagious conditions your child may contract, such as strep throat, head lice or scabies. In this way, the nurse will be able to take appropriate measures to protect other students. Where public health is concerned, your cooperation is essential.

We must be able to reach parents/guardians during the day, at home, at work, or through a neighbor or relative. Please be sure that the home and emergency phone numbers listed for your student are kept up to date by updating them in Campus Parent or by contacting the front office. Should your child become sick or injured at school, we will try to contact the parent/guardian first and then work our way through the emergency numbers. The student may not leave the school until a parent/guardian signs the child out in the school office.

Medications

Whenever possible, please have your child take medication before or after school. However, if a student is required to take medication during school hours and the parent cannot be at school to administer the medication, then only the school nurse or designated person may administer the medication in compliance with the original container and the regulations that follow:

1. Written instructions signed by parents and physicians are required and must include

student's name
name of medication
purpose of medication
time to be administered
dosage
possible side effects
ending date for administering medication

2. The school nurse will:

inform appropriate school personnel of the medication
keep a record of the administering of medication
keep medication in a locked cabinet

The parent of the student assumes responsibility for informing the school nurse of any change in the student's health or change in medication. The school district retains the discretion to reject requests for the administration of medicine. A copy of this regulation will be provided to parents upon their request for the administration of medication in the school. The prescribing of or lack of medication as determined by the physician will in no way affect the enrollment of a student in Independent School District #625 (SPPS). A student observed to be taking unauthorized medication will be reported to the school administration and their parents/guardians.

Center for Culture, Families and Learning

The Center for Culture, Families, and Learning (CCFL) is a partnership between Maxfield Elementary and the Cultural Wellness Center. Through this partnership Maxfield families are connected to the resources of the Saint Paul Promise Neighborhood initiative and to the wide variety of programs provided by the Cultural Wellness Center and Maxfield. These resources include things like Housing classes, Wellness and Cultural Self Study classes, and monthly information and discussion sessions for Maxfield parents/guardians. They also include regular Cultural Class for Maxfield students in grades 1-5 and a gender-based Rights of Passage program for 4th and 5th graders.

Kofi Services

Kofi Services at Maxfeild Elementary provides school-based mental health and wellness services that are culturally centered, trauma-informed and impactful for the whole family. The Kofi therapist supports the unique identities and experiences of students and their families, right in school! Children and families receive culturally affirming, holistic, therapeutic support, while school teachers and staff access trauma-informed consultation. The word “Kofi” is derived from an Akan Asente (a Ghanaian dialect) word meaning “child of growth.”

Therapists and other Kofi Services professionals work closely with the students and their families in school and home settings. Kofi’s goals are:

Stabilizing and improving mental health
Providing cultural affirmation and role modeling for students
Improving behaviors at home, in school and in the community
Helping maintain or improve school success
Increasing parental involvement in the child’s education and school activities
Inspire hope for the future

Kofi Services was developed in collaboration with Ramsey County Human Services, the Saint Paul Public Schools District and the Wilder Foundation.

Promise Neighborhood

Education Navigators for the Saint Paul Promise Neighborhood work to support both students and families. The Navigators are Cultural Wellness Center staff who work specifically with the families and students of Maxfield Elementary and also work to support other families living in the Promise Neighborhood.
