What Is a Family-School Compact?

A Family-School Compact for Achievement is an agreement that parents, students and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all students get the individual support they need to reach and exceed grade level standards. Jointly Developed with Parents

The parents at Maxfield helped develop this Compact for Achievement. Schoolwide meetings are held each year to update the compact. Parents are welcome to contribute comments at any time.

Activities to Support Partnerships

Academic Parent Teacher Teams (APTT) and Conferences 

PreKindergarten and Kindergarten are involved in APTT. Teacher teams will set up 3 meeting times during the school year in which parents will come together to set goals for their child’s learning and learn ways to help their child meet those goals. We also have Fall conferences in November and Spring conferences in March. 

Family Advisory Council

The Family Advisory Council will meet several times throughout the year to strengthen the Family-School community and to learn with and from each other. The value of our Family Advisory Council is enhanced by the multiple and diverse perspectives brought to the group by its individual members.

Visit Classrooms

Parents are welcome to visit their child’s classrooms while maintaining the current health and wellness guidelines and protocols.  Always stop in the office to sign in and get a Visitor’s Name Tag.

School’s Role

Maxfield staff will work with scholars and their families to support scholars’ success in literacy and mathematics. Some of our key connections with families will be: 

• Provide families with materials for at-home learning in both literacy and mathematics. 
• Partner with the University of St. Thomas as a collaborative school.
• Partner with St. Paul Promise Neighborhood, Cultural Wellness Center, Women’s Assistance League, Nettie and Friends, as well as other community organizations to help support our scholars and families.
• Share grade-level expectations for literacy, math, and science with families so they know what their child is learning. 
• Offer Family Nights each year that engage families in mathematics, literacy, and science activities.  Transportation, translators, and child care are available upon request.

Family’s Role

• Maxfield Elementary parents joined staff to share ideas about how families can support scholars’ success in reading and math. Families may have other ideas to add to this list. 
• Have fun with math. Look for the many ways that you use math every day around the house.  Play the math games that are sent home and think up new games to play. 
• Try to attend Family Nights or get information from the Center for Culture, Families, and  Learning, or my child’s teacher, if we can’t attend.  
• Play word games with the new vocabulary words and find ways to use these words in family conversations. 
• Look for the class newsletters and check out the school website and Facebook page.
• Increase academic growth in reading and math for all scholars
• Prepare all graduates for college, career, and life.

Scholar’s Role

Maxfield Elementary scholars identified ways they can succeed in school and ways to make their hopes and dreams come true. scholars thought of the following ideas to make connections between  learning at home and school:  

• Do homework and turn it in to the teacher on time. 
• Talk with my family about what I am learning in school. 
• Read at home every night. 
• Help others by reading to my little brother, sister, or cousin. 
• Play games to practice my math. 
• Bring home our class newsletter and the  Principal’s Newsletter.  
• Learn about my family history and culture.

Maxfield Goals (SCIP)

• At least 85% of Maxfield scholars will regularly attend school with less than ten days absent during the school year.
• The percentage of students scoring proficient or higher in reading will increase by at least 5%.
• The percentage of students scoring proficient or higher in mathematics will increase by at least 5%.
