Maxfield Magnet School Gifted and Talented Education

At Maxfield, we believe that all students have gifts and talents. We work to identify students strengths and build on them. We also work collaboratively with students to help them develop natural abilities through challenging and rigorous learning opportunities.

Students at Maxfield are immersed in varied levels of challenges and services. We provide three levels of services, which include but are not limited to:

Services for ALL students:

Everyday Math
Writer's Workshop
Reader's Workshop
Specialist Rotation (Physical Education, Science, Global Studies)
Field Trips
Fast Math / Computer math skills practice

Services for MANY students:

Math Flexible Grouping based on strengths and needs
Volunteers tutoring in both math and reading
Band / Orchestra
Gifted and Talented services

Image Gallery: Case Study completed by GT Students
Students at Maxfield read a variety of literature and focused on the important contributions of people of color. They identified experiences of racism in their personal lives and talked about how we transcend beyond our experiences to be of service to others.


Image Gallery: Change
Second and third graders at Maxfield completed a case study with their peers as a way to discover what motivates kids to change. Results indicated that having a positive racial identity contributes to one's overall ability to change personal behavior in school, at home and in life.

1st- Students brainstormed ideas about, "What is change?" 2nd- Students generated a list of areas in their lives in which they wanted to create change. 3rd- Students highlighted themes of change and put the ways in which they wanted to change into categories. 4th- Results indicated that children are capable of reflection and change.

My name is Kim Hwang and I am the Gifted and Talented Specialist at Maxfield Magnet School. I have had the privilege of teaching in St. Paul for the past 19 years. I have a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Thomas and a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from Minnesota School of Professional Psychology. I feel fortunate to work with the students and staff at Maxfield Magnet School. I feel honored to work collaboratively with families and students each day.
