MATH: The class just finished taking the written assessment for Unit 5.  Please ask your child for the Family Letter for Unit 6.  In Unit 6, students will learn to use data and add and subtract fractions.  We go to the computer lab to practice Fast Math and other math concepts for approximately 1/2 hour on Mondays, Tuesday, and Wednesdays.

READING:
Students participate in guided reading, read alouds, independent reading, partner and small group reading.  They are currently reading Maniac MaGee, Sadako and the Thousand Cranes and Dingoes at Dinnertime in Book Club.  We continue to discuss and practice forms of figurative language and comprehension strategies.  The class did a nice job illustrating and explaining idioms.  I welcome your participation in your child's learning.  You are welcome to help out in any way you can.
Your child should be reading at least 30 minutes nightly from a variety of print.

WRITING:
We are just finishing writing friendly letters to the author Christopher Paul Curtis.  The class is responding to his book, BUD, NOT BUDDY. Our next genre study is the memoir.  A memoir is a narrative composed from personal experiences.  Students will learn about different styles of memoirs and write their own.  Please help remind your child of memorale events and people in their lives.
